From screen to stage: Almodvar's All About My Mother

Pedro Almodvar's All About My Mother, winner of major cinematic awards, including an Oscar in 2000, is considered by many to be his greatest film. It is also the first of his films to have been adapted for the theatre, Samuel Adamson's stage version having opened at the Old Vic Theatre, London, in September 2007. Almodvar's movie is distinguished by its visual quality, its emotional impact, its use of music, its brilliant screenplay, its excellent acting, its flawless expression of particular themes, and, in particular, by its theatricality. This paper is intended to emphasize all these aspects of Almodvar's film, and to examine the way in which Adamson seeks to adapt a masterpiece distinguished by its theatricality to the very different medium of the stage.
