The European Commission has welcomed France's decision to allocate spectrum freed up by digital switchover to mobile broadband. The plan to give 72MHz of the "digital dividend" to mobile broadband is part of "France Numerique 2012", a report by Eric Besson, secretary of state for the development of the digital economy, that was published last week. Viviane Reding, European commissioner for the information society, said in a statement to Informa Telecoms & Media: "France's 'Numerique 2012 plan not only comes at the right time but also contains the right ambitions. "This is a first and important step towards a 'broadband for all' Europe in the very near future. I hope that more EU member states will follow this positive example and present ambitious plans for the management of the digital dividend."
