Zon Multimedia will be allowed to bid for pay-television licences in the tender for Portugal's planned digital-terrestrial television platform, after having previously been excluded from the contest because of its dominant market position. In tender documents published this Monday, Portuguese communications regulator Anacom said that it would not accept bids from pay-television providers with an existing market share greater than 50 per cent. But the regulator admitted that Zon, which recently rebranded from PT Multimedia, would be able to participate in the tender if it joined a consortium of bidders as a minority stakeholder. The company, which was recently spun off from incumbent Portugal Telecom, has an 80-per-cent share of the country's pay-television market with approximately 1.5 million customers.
