Researchers at the State .Key Laboratory of High Field Laser Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics have successfully developed a multifunctional and high-energy laser beam system (also known as the ninth laser beam) at the Shenguang-II Laser Facility (SGII).rnLaunched in October 2002, the CNY92 million (US$1.3 billion) project was set up to build an additional beam to the existing eight laser amplification chains at SGII, an important experimental platform for the short-term and mid-term studies of inertial confinement fusion in China.rnIt was completed on 6 November, 2008, and passed an acceptance check conducted by a panel of experts under the auspices of CAS, the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics and the national 863 Programme for High-tech Research and Development in Shanghai.
