Korea's LG Hausys has developed a plastic gearbox oil pan for Hyundai KIA using BASF's engineering plastic Ultramid - a heat-stabilized polyamide 66 reinforced with 35% glass fibre - the first time a Hyundai engine has been fitted with a plastic oil panrnThe main purpose of the gearbox oil pan is to contain the transmission oil and it is traditionally made from steel. Replacing steel with Ultramid reduces its weight by 40%. The lighter weight of this polymer gearbox oil pan compared with that of the steel version means reduced fuel consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Acoustically, the component is also about 3 dB quieter than its metal predecessor, an important advantage since lower noise emission is a paramount criterion in modern driving.
