With reference to Peter Styles comments (NCE 2 October), the answer to lowering casualties is not lower speed limits. It is more police cars. Today's cars have ABS, fantastic safety features, better chassis and much improved tyres compared to those of the 1960s. That was when the current speed limits and highway code stopping distances were set. That was also when a policeman was more likely to be on hand to see a road rage incident or someone darting from lane to lane before flying off onto the exit lane at the last minute.
