A report published earlier this year by financial services company Citi Group concluded that $2,500bn (£1,500bn) of projects are currently under way in the Middle East and North Africa, with more than half of these in either Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to the report, around £860bn of projects are currently being built, while a further £370bn are at a "relatively advanced" stage of development and the remaining £310bn are in the early stages. A large amount of this investment is going on commercial, residential and leisure developments, while around £500bn is being spent on infrastructure and a further £185bn on energy and water schemes.
