What's the connection between a 1,220 km/h super-fast tube transport system designed to revolutionise travel in California and, say, a leaky pond or woody debris dam designed to transform flood risk in urban areas further downstream? Both seem fanciful. But that's not it. Both - that's serial entrepreneur Elon Musk's Hyperloop and the Environment Agency's natural flood management approach - are well underway with test tracks and pilots respectively to prove they work. The connection is the new breed of innovative, open-minded, entrepreneurial engineers that are making both happen -with little or no public money. I met some of these incredibly inspirational engineers from both projects this week.
