Preface: Special issue on freight transportation and logistics

This special issue of Networks is dedicated to the seventh edition of Odysseus 2018. This international workshop on freight transportation and logistics was held in Cagliari (Italy) from June 3 to June 8, 2018. The overarching aim of Odysseus 2018 was to provide a high-quality forum where researchers in the field of freight transportation and logistics could discuss recent experiences, trends and advances in the theory, practice and application of mathematical models, methodologies, and decision support systems.Odysseus 2018 brought together more than 180 academics, researchers, and practitioners and enjoyed an enthusiastic reception from the freight transportation and logistics community, as shown by the high volume of submissions. A rigorous selection process was conducted to continue the tradition of excellence and advance the field. This special issue aims to disseminate some of the resulting scientific contributions. In addition to work originally presented at Odysseus 2018, we also welcome a few additional high-quality papers that fit our topic. The six papers included in this special issue are briefly described below.
