Live in the Labs: IP PBXs

We brought a trio of VoIP systems in-house to evaluate SIP compatibility. Avaya's SIP Telephony Solution got the first-place call, thanks to its excellent interoperability and features-to-price ratio. When we introduced our fictional underwriter HaveNoFear Insurance LLC, which protects the makers of reality-TV shows from lawsuits by disgruntled or damaged contestants, the company was seeking a basic VoIP (voice over IP) system (see "VoIP to the Rescue," ID# 1512f2). But HNF executives realized that implementing VoIP without SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) could expose it to a risky vendor lock-in scenario. So we took HNF's fear factor in hand and sent the first-round vendor participants an updated RFP seeking SIP-enabled IP PBXs. We uppecl the ante by bringing the systems into our Syracuse University Real-World Labs~(~R) to test their support for third-party SIP phones and endpoints.
