Deep geological repositoriesnaim to protect humans andnthe environment from the hazardsnassociated with long-livednradioactive waste over timescalesnoften up to several thousandnor even a million years.nRadioactive waste managementnthus involves a unique considerationnof the evolution of thenwaste and engineered barriers,nand the interactions betweennthese components and geologicalnbarriers over very longnperiods of time. Over longnenough timescales, however,neven the most stable engineerednmaterials and geologicalnenvironments are subjectnto perturbing events andnchanges that are subject tonuncertainties. The uncertaintiesnassociated with the evolutionnof the disposal system have tonbe appropriately considerednand managed throughout anrepository development programme.
