To perform landing and take off, commercial aircraft for long range national or international flight shall be equipped in the future with landing equipments able to work with different systems. As ILS will be maintained for several decades, new systems shall be installed in parallel with the existing one. The installation of new landing aids in a commercial aircraft requires to consider not only the cost of the new equipment(s) but also - and in a big proportion -the cost of the necessary modifications of the aircraft (Autopilot, display, command & control units, etc.), the new aircraft certification, pilots training, eventual changes in the operational procedures linked to the new system, etc.. The technical feasibility to build up a new airborne landing system is not sufficient to define the best airborne system, taking into account all the critical aspects of landing and the installation constraint linked to it. This article explains the constraints for landing and why the MMR is the best solution to install new landing systems in parallel with the existing ILS in commercial aircrafts.
