The interplay of impe-rial Japan, nationalist Chinese, communist Chinese, Great Britain, Germany, the Soviet Union, France, and the United States from 1937 through 1945 creates a challenging labyrinth to navigate with accuracy and objectivity. Consequently, the editors have avoided attempting to define the facts of the matter and instead have offered essays from the perspectives of scholars from China, Taiwan, Japan, and the United States.
