The Luetzow's Trial by Fire

On the morning of 8 August 1915, the weak rays of the autumn sun shone through veils of mist at the Ferdinand Schichau Dockyard in Danzig as a battle flag and pennant were raised on the jackstaff and mainmast of the newest addition to Germany's Imperial Navy. Drums beat softly and horns resounded as the battlecruiser Luetzow was commissioned. Though brief, the ship's life would be momentous, and the Luetzow's final ordeal would prove the durability of her design.
