Welcome to the ASNE Day 2008 issue of the Naval Engineers Journal. This issue provides a review of ASNE Day 2008 - its papers, its discussions, and its outcomes. Those of you who were fortunate enough to attend came away, I have no doubt, with a better appreciation of the challenges in bringing the next generation of major naval surface combatants, the CG(X), into being. These challenges were well captured in the technical papers, and in the keynote and other addresses during the event. ASNE Day 2008 was well-attended by both government and industry - and it proved to be the perfect forum for discussion of the difficulties in conceptualizing, defining, specifying and eventually constructing a cutting edge and highly integrated major weapons system.
