The STANDARD Missile/AEGIS Story

The AEGIS story is one that merges Navy air defense missile development with shipboard radar and control system development. These efforts were evolutionary in character, heavily dependent on engineering and technology maturation, and driven by an ever-increasing threat of air attacks on our fleet. While the Navy had three major air defense systems in the fleet by the late 1960s, the AEGIS weapon system development was the first time radar, control system, and missile developments were performed by a single engineering and management structure.
