Damage Costs of Air Pollution from Ships in the Region of the Sea of Marmara

Ship emissions are significantly increasing globally, and have a remarkable impact on air quality on both sea and land. These emissions have already had a significant impact on air quality and public health, especially in coastal communities. Territorial waters, inland seas, and ports, are most affected by ship emissions. The Sea of Marmara is an inland sea that is located in the northwest of Turkey and experiences dense ship traffic. Since the region of the Marmara is highly urbanized, emissions from ships affect human health and its natural environment. Ship emissions growth rate and the costs from damage due to ship emissions in the Sea of Marmara are calculated by utilizing data acquired in 2003 and 2011. The growth rate in the shipping emissions of NOx, SO_2, CO, VOC, PM, and CO_2 are 10.8%, 11.59%, 10.42%, 9.96%, 11.58%, and 6.1%, respectively, in this region between 2003 and 2011. The value of total health damage cost of emissions in the Sea of Marmara can be ranked as SO_2, NOx, CO_2, PM, and VOC for the years 2010 and 2011.
