His three-ship fleet sailed from Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, Spain on August 3, 1492 and landed on October 14 the same year at San Salvador, thus "discovering America." (Pastor 1992) Santa Maria was Columbus's flagship and most recent research is fairly conclusive that this was a nao while Nina and Pinta probably were caravels. No one knows for certain the design and specifications for the ships, but research through the years has arrived at some certainty. A nao traditionally had a main deck, forecastle, quarterdeck and poop along with a lower cabin deck.
