Bartholomew Roberts, Woodes Rogers, and the Jolly Roger

If there is one symbol that represents piracy, it must be the Jolly Roger, the black flag commonly depicted with a skull and crossbones. The banner appeared during the Golden Age of Piracy which lasted from 1716 to 1726. The first reference probably occurred in September 1716, when a newspaper article described pirates from Jamaica flying "a black Ensign made with Deaths Head on it, and a white Pennet at the Top-mast head, made with a naked Man and a Sword in his Hand.
