Long Tom: The American Naval Pivot Gun in the War of 1812

During the War of 1812 the pivot gun came of age. It became the weapon of choice and was used on United States Navy and privateer schooners, brigs and sloops before and throughout the war. There have been many books written about the exploits of American privateers, but relatively little is known about how they were armed. It is hoped that this article will shed a little more light on this overlooked subject.
