Staff at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland, are facing the prospect of a one-year pay cut of 2.5 per cent in exchange for an extra five-and-a-half days leave, as part of a bid by management to reduce running costs. The proposal is an emergency measure to cope with a major cut in CERN's budget, prompted by Germany's decision to reduce its subscription sharply next year. That decision is expected to be approved at CERN's council meeting tomorrow (20 December).
