Mice perform a human repertoire

Ever since the first mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were created, a major challenge has been to obtain human mAbs for therapeutic use. People cannot be immunized with the desired antigen, so during the 1980s mouse mAbs were raised using conventional hybridoma technology and then 'humanized' on an individual basis — those parts of the mouse antibody that were not essential for binding to the antigen were replaced by corresponding human sequences. Although it was successful, this approach had to be carried out on a case-by-case basis and the mAbs retained some mouse sequences.
