Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Novartis, a partnership aimed at creating better cancer therapeutics

In 1992, Sandoz established a new internal effort in cancer research at its US site in East Hanover, NJ. In order to jumpstart this effort and provide a stable platform for the fledgling program, an alliance with a major cancer research center was sought. Although discussions were held with a number of organizations, it was obvious from the start that the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA (DFCI) would be an excellent collaborator in such an endeavor. DFCI has a top international reputation for basic cancer research and treatment, and it was apparent that their scientific programs were focused in areas that were deemed relevant to Sandoz planned drug development efforts in cancer. It was also evident that the DFCI program was growing rapidly and that the Institute had attracted top scientific talent to its faculty.
