Glowing oceans

Building on earlier research into global assessments of ocean productivity, a team led by Michael Behrenfeld of Oregon State University in Corvallis reports the first satellite-based evidence linking phytoplankton fluorescence to iron stress in surface waters.rnUsing images collected by the MODIS sensor aboard NASA's Aqua satellite between 2003 and 2007, the team found that high fluorescence levels were highly correlated with low iron levels in surface waters.
