Eisai's Access to Medicine initiative opens the door to Chagas cure

Sixteen years ago, when Eisai Co Ltd. discovered an antifungal compound, scientists there had no idea it would lead them to combat a major public health threat in Latin America. But after a doctor in Venezuela noted the drugs potential efficacy against Chagas-a neglected disease that kills roughly 14,000 people per year in Latin America-Eisai was ready to collaborate. "It's part of our philosophy," says Kenji Toda, Eisai's Senior Vice President for Government Relations. "We are committed to developing pharmaceuticals that satisfy unmet medical needs, thus increasing the benefits to patients around the world."
