Two months into his new job, President Barack Obama gathered a group of scientists at the White House to sign a memorandum on scientific integrity that declared "Science and the scientific process must inform and guide decisions of my Administration". The 2009 statement promised that "political officials should not suppress or alter scientific or technological findings and conclusions".
