Yellow river turns red

A stretch of the Yangtze River near Chongqing in southwest China turned red on 6 September. What caused the sudden change in the river s colour is still unclear, but freshwater scientists contacted by Nature say that it is unlikely to be attributable to an algal bloom because such algae do not grow in oxygen-rich, fast-flowing river waters.
