An insight into the mechanisms that drive nucleons-protons and neutrons-to form clusters is provided by Ebran and colleagues~1 on page 341 of this issue. They show that a significant driver of this process is the nature of the nuclear potential that confines the neutrons and protons to the nucleus: the deeper the potential, the more defined the clusters become. The textbook view of the nucleus is a quasi-homogeneous collection of protons and neutrons, which adopt an approximately spherical configuration-a spherical droplet of nuclear matter. However, even in the earliest days of nuclear physics, there was speculation that for light nuclei, the nucleons-which are fermions (particles that have half-integer spin)-might actually arrange themselves into clusters of bosonic character, which have integer spin. This speculation grew out of the experimental observation that the bosonic a-particle (a helium-4 nucleus) was much more stable than other light nuclei.
