A shining life

Hans Bethe was one of the outstanding scientists of the twentieth century, making seminal contributions to almost all areas of theoretical physics. When he died in 2005, aged 98, he was the last of the generation whose members had, in their youth, established quantum mechanics as the descriptive theory of the atomic world. He was also one of the last veterans of the Manhattan Project.
