Physicist Steven Koonin, the former undersecretary for science at the US Department of Energy, will head up an urban science centre in Brooklyn, New York. The Center for Urban Science and Progress, announced on 23 April, is one of three research centres that will be built on city-owned land, under a regeneration initiative spearheaded by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.
