Germaine Greer, feminist polemicist and fomenter of permanent revolution, has been hiding her light under a bushel. White Beech reveals her as one of the finest natural history writers to grace a page. This largely autobiographical work documents her restoration of around 60 hectares of montane (high-altitude) rainforest in southeast Queensland, Australia. The project was balm for a deep hurt. She writes: "I had seen devastation, denuded hills, eroded slopes, weeds from all over the world, feral animals, open-cut mines as big as cities, salt rivers, salt earth, abandoned townships, whole beaches made of beer cans. Give me just a chance to clean something up, sort something out, make it right, I thought, and I will take it."
