Under the present basic ecological conditions in the forests of the Nordpfalzer Bergland uplands in Rhineland-Palati-nate, Germany, there seems to be no dispersion of the investigated neophytic species Fallopia japonica, Fallopia sachali-nensis and a not clearly identified hybrid form (Fallopia X bohemica) of the two species. Accordingly these species are not able to establish colonies under the crown canopy of closed forests. Nevertheless it cannot be assumed that our forest ecosystems are resistant to invasion by this neophytic group (Kowarik 2003). As the findings from other areas show, Fallopia reacts spontaneously and rapidly to increased light. Alberternst (1998) has supplied comprehensive information on the biology, ecology, dispersion and control of Fallopia on the basis of her investigations in Baden-Wurttemberg. Further investigations will show how the competitive ability of Fallopia develops, in particular in relation to changes in the regional climate and anthropogenic inputs, e. g. of nitrogen. Further research and monitoring is therefore required.
