A Time Traveler in Kenya

Thirty-five years ago, I was born and given the name Cullen, in honor of an Irishman who was then my father's boss at the Kilembe mines in Uganda. My parents were from western Kenya, but I spent the first five years of my life in Uganda, where Father had found work as a civil engineer. After the two neighboring nations failed to resolve the labor migration crisis, Kenyans were forced to leave Uganda, and we settled in Father's village of Kaptola, where my parents had a modest two-bedroom house.
