NATO IS AND REMAINS THE STRONGEST ANCHOR OF OUR COMMON SECURITY

The border line between external and internal security becomes more and more blurry. As a country in the centre of Europe we have a special interest in European capacity to act regarding internal and external security. The Federal Government supports seriously the further development of the common foreign and security policy on the basis of the European Security Strategy. Europe must be capable to act in a security-political framework. That is not a replacement of but an addition to NATO. Our concern is to strengthen the European pillar of the alliance and, thereby the alliance altogether; because NATO is and remains the strongest anchor of our common security. It is the central strategic consultation and coordination forum. We want to strengthen this function and fill it with new life. I made that clear during my visit in Brussels.
