For Australia's major airlines-Qantas. its off-shoot Jetstar. and Virgin - the warnings put out by Darwin's Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) meant it was time to assess the risks of flying and set in place strategies to cancel, reschedule or re-route flights and advise airline passengers of those decisions. Across the Tasman. Air New Zealand faced similar decisions, with the ash cloud extending across the country's South Island.
