Of the many strategic policy issues that now need to be decided by the UK after its exit from the European Union, the matter of air quality regulation has not been the most prominent - but it may be one of the most important. After all, Britain has taken criticism for several years for falling below international standards for its air pollution prevention measures. Now that it is no longer subject to EU oversight, campaigners are concerned about the UK falling further behind. As such, in the years ahead, it will become more important than ever for the UK to demonstrate its willingness to be proactive about combating air pollution even as a non-EU nation - and making use of the full range of scientific tools available will be essential in doing so.
