Fine doubled to $500,000

Victoria's Court of Appeal has doubled to $500,000 the fine imposed on an industrial equipment hire company earlier this year. Coates Hire Operations was initially fined $250,000 in the County Court of Victoria after the death of a subcontractor in February 2007. The Director of Public Prosecutions appealed against this sentence, saying the fine was manifestly inadequate.
