摘要

At the height of the last ice age 17 000 years ago, Java was not an island but part of a south-eastern peninsula off Asia which included Sumatra and Borneo. Java's south coast was not unlike it is today, whereas its north coast had not yet emerged.Classical Greece and Rome had no knowledge of the island of Java but, by the Middle Ages, the geography of the lands beyond India was beginning to enter the European consciousness.
