National Guard crews spent much of last month helping Oklahoma and Texas firefighters douse wildfires that, since November, have claimed at least five lives, destroyed about 600 homes and charred more than 800,000 acres. Hardest hit the first week of January was Texas, where months of drought and unseasonably warm weather have turned prairies into tinderboxes. Guard crews there were helping firefighters battle a 22,000-acre blaze threatening more than 200 homes near Carbon, Texas, in the north central part of the state.
