When Chaplain (Col.) Daniel Krum-rei started his new position at the Illinois National Guard Joint Force Headquarters in March 2005, the state's chaplain corps was at 34 percent strength, with only seven positions filled.rnHowever, the most recent fiscal year closed with the Illinois Guard chaplain corps over strength at 110 percent with 23 chaplains and 14 chaplain candidates.rnKrumrei said the key to the increase is the effort made by those seven chaplains on hand three years ago. He called them soon after taking his new job and told them recruiting other chaplains was their new priority.rn"Everyone said, 'That's not myjob," he recalled recently. "Then I said, T don't care. We're going to do it or we're not going to have a chaplain corps."
