You Have To admire my timing. I couldn't have taken the reins at a more challenging juncture. My first year as the NGAUS chairman has coincided with the association's effort to achieve full-member status for the National Guard Bureau chief on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, one of the most important pieces of legislation for the Guard in our history. Domestic operations are not a core competency of the active services. Defending the homeland is a uniquely Guard mission. We are the experts, yet we are left out of this critical decision-making process. Our chief can offer his opinion, but has no vote. Not having a seat at the table means no voice for the nearly half-million Guardsmen who protect our nation and its citizens every day.
