Fine Structure Characterization of Nanorod Materials Using Neutron Scattering and Synchrotron Radiation Techniques -AReview

The present work provides an overwhelmed overview of the recent progress of research work performed to identify the ID nanorods or nanowires by using the powerful neutron scattering (e.g. INS or SANS) and synchrotron radiation (e.g. EXAFS, XANES, SAXS or RJXS). The review has been classified into three parts: introduction of basic concepts, fundamentals, and applications of neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation, respectively. From literature survey, INS or SANS is the most straightforward methods for the investigations of dynamical properties of Au/silica/diamond or magnetic (Fe, Co, and Ni) nanorods. The EXAFS or XANES spectroscopy has widely proven to be very effective in determining both electronic and geometric structures of Au/Pd, GaAs or Pt nanowires and ZnO/TiO_2 nanorods, respectively. Moreover, SAXS can understand direct indication of the spatial heterogeneity of nanorods and RIXS also provides the information of their magnetic properties and electronic configuration of iron nanorods. In addition, this work was also summarized with a perspective on the future analytical trends for the development of using these two different powerful high-energy light sources of neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation respectively for the fine structure investigation of ID nanorod or nanowire materials.
