SPARES FOR CRUISING

I have yet to sail into a "third world" port without meeting at least one, and usually several, cruisers who are twiddling their thumbs waiting for this or that spare part to arrive from the "first world." Even with the convenience of e-mail, fax, phone, and courier services that put us in immediate touch with chandleries and suppliers it still takes ages to receive needed spares when far off the beaten track. To deal with this, savvy sailors on extended cruises have learned to carry an extensive inventory of essential spares.
