A Peek into the New Residential Financial District

In a recent panel discussion, titled "Downtown Milestones: The Past, Present and Future of the Financial District," which took place in a luxury penthouse in the Financial District (or, FiDi, as hip New Yorkers are starting to call it), Joyce Gold of History Tours of New York LLC; Julie Shapiro of DNAinfo.com; and Stephanie Jennings, assistant vice president for economic development at the Alliance for Downtown New York, discussed the ever-changing nature of downtown Manhattan. Most surprising? FiDi is now an in-demand residential hub. In the last 10 years, FiDi's population has doubled; currently there are 28,500 residential units. Additionally, rents have increased 33 percent, according to the Alliance for Downtown New York.
