Forest Service fire lookouts are somewhat unique among UFO witnesses, according to Dr. James Doerter, who has completed a study of such sightings. First, lookouts are in an excellent position to spot anomalous objects, since their job is to scan the surrounding countryside from towers which provide commanding views. Doerter explains, "Fire towers exist in remote sections of the country, and by plan offer almost unlimited visibility. The construction of the cabin is such that almost anytime the lookout is on his feet, he or she is working." Secondly, there is a special psychological factor which may affect these witnesses. Because of their isolated locales, lookouts have no immediate backup or support system to deal with an often upsetting sighting experience, especially if there is a close encounter. For this reason, Doerter has appealed to the Forest Service to set up a reporting system, to treat reports with respect, and to provide support as needed.
