A deadly encounter

As the "Cold War" began heat-ing up in the early 1950's, the U.S. Department of Defense identified the shipping locks at Sault Ste Marie as a potential target for Russian bombers. The United States Air Force was tasked with defending the Sault Ste Marie Locks at any cost. That mission fell, primarily, to the aircraft and aircrews at Kinross Air Force Base, located just 20 miles south of Sault Ste Marie.
