The need for accurate and reliable data on UFO sightings is critical to the analysis and documentation of events. It follows then that the better the data, the more valuable the observation becomes. To this end, in the May issue of the Journal, Dr. Donald Burleson presented some simple procedures for determining speed, direction, distance, etc. of an object. Following this work, it is important to be able to position the observation on the celestial sphere. This not only adds to the data quality but it allows the determination that the observation wasn't a natural celestial object. It is important to understand that even the most knowledgeable observer can be fooled by some seemingly obvious natural or manmade object. That is why it is important to be able to gather as much data about the sightings as possible in order to eliminate observations of this type.
