摘要

There have certainly been many grossly inaccurate articles about UFOs written by "scientists" trying to "educate" the public. A particularly bad example was published in early July by Donavan Webster about historian Roger Launius, retired curator of Space History of the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C. He seems not to have bothered to do any serious investigation. He notes that July is the 70th anniversary of the Roswell Incident, but can't be bothered doing any research to get his facts right. It was just a Mogul balloon, he proclaims. He barely mentions Kenneth Arnold's sighting, claiming he was an amateur pilot (he actually had thousands of hours of flying time and owned his own plane) who saw one object. No mention that he made measurements of the time it took the "object" to fly between two mountains and found that the speed was over 1,200 mph. The speed record then was about 700 mph. There were nine craft, not one. There were other witnesses to the nine objects. He was able to compare their size to that of an aircraft in the sky at the time.
