Offshore drilling for oil began off the coast of Summerfield, California, in 1896, while the first discovery in deep water (depths of 300 m or more) came at Shell Oil Company's Cognac field in 1975. The success rate of exploratory offshore wells shot up once 3-D seismology and other improvements became common. Global deep water production capacity has more than tripled since 2000, with production of oil and gas becoming more of a global phenomenon in recent years.
