bouncing over the waves at a speed of 43 knots, the director of the Netherlands Defence Materiel Organisation, Arie Jan de Waard with MARIN director Bas Buchner, made the first test voyage of the moving Fast Small Ship Simulator (FSSS) in Summer 2016. The FSSS was built by MARIN and partners Cruden and TreeC as part of a joint industry project from 2015 to 2017. Voice Admiral de Waard experienced the test as very realistic, saying, "You feel as if you are invoked in a complex operation at sea. Virtual reality like this is going to play a large role in education and training." The operation of small fast manned craft at high speeds in waves is associated with the frequent occurrence of impacts of the craft on the water surface. These impacts cause the boats and crews to be exposed to large peaks in the accel-erations. At sufficiently high speeds, each wave encounter can become an impact event. These high accelerations not only cause crew discomfort; they also can lead to damage to the craft or even personal injury. Part of the effect of the high accelerations can be mitigated by fitting shock absorbing seats. Nevertheless, cases of injury are reported, often linked to back injuries that accumulate over time.
